Libraries
While we probably all think of libraries as a great resource for researching a topic, checking out new books and favorite reads, or taking home DVDs or CDs to enjoy on loan, you might be surprised to learn that libraries also offer a range of free fun programs and activities for people of all ages.
In the District alone, there are nearly 30 libraries that offer more programs than we could possibly list.
Some favorites (and uncommon) activities include:
- Movie nights
- Computer classes
- Chess meetups
- Jazz and coloring
- Lectures on a range of topics
- Sewing workshops, knitting circles, and crochet lessons
- Yoga
- English conversation classes
- Job and resume support
- Poetry and creative writing workshops
- News discussion groups
- Crafts
- And more!
In addition to enriching programs and activities, you can also access books, magazines, large type books, CDs, DVDs, downloadable movies and television shows, audio books, digital books, and more. You can also reserve library meeting rooms for your own gatherings.
Each library has its own schedule of unique programs, depending on the communities it serves and staff interests. If you’d like to see your neighborhood library offer a specific program, don’t hesitate to let staff know! You can visit the library website, go to your library in-person, or call your library to learn more about the programs it offers.
Additionally, most libraries also have Friends of the Library Groups, which are made up of advocates for the library. They also contribute to the library by offering additional programs, like speakers and book talks, and support that might not be provided by public funding. They always welcome volunteers.
